Bergevin Lane Reviews and articles
Bergevin Lane- 2004 Merlot (Columbia Valley)
This is pure Merlot which, in Washington, does not equate to lifeless, wimpy wine. Au contraire, this reveals supple, lovely flavors of mixed re apples, plums and cranberry. There are firm acids anchoring it, and I like the snap of the fruit as it hits the back of the palate. It is a very accessible, approachable wine that finishes with a nicely applied layer of milk chocolaty oak. 88 pts.

Bergevin Lane-2005 Viognier (Columbia Valley)
Round, generous and silky textured with layers of apricot, pear, spice and mineral flavors lingering effortlessly on an impeccably balanced finish. 91 pts.

Bergevin Lane 2006 Calico White ... Many fine viogniers are being made in Washington, and the popularity of this bright, floral white wine is soaring. Still, it is difficult to find a good one in the affordable ... price range. So I'm offering up this delicious Calico White from Bergevin Lane, which blends two-thirds chardonnay with one-third viognier — enough to get the gist of it. Orange-peel aromas set up the crisp flavors, and it has a delightfully zippy palate-cleansing presence.

Bergevin Lane 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
90 pts. “Smooth & round, w/ generous cherry & currant fruit rolling easily over the palate, hinting at roasted red pepper and moke and the finish lingers against a hint of sweet oak.” H.S. Pair with grilled meats, red pasta, or your imagination!

89 pts. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon contains 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in 41% new French, American, and East European oak. Elements of pain grille, earth notes, spice box, black currants, and blackberry are enticing. On the palate the fruit is sweeter and riper than the Merlot with more structure. This nicely balanced effort will evolve for 2-3 years and be at its best from 2010 to 2018. - Jay Miller.

Bergevin Lane 2007 Viognier, Columbia Valley
90 pts. Lemon oil and candle wax add interesting nuances to the citrusy, barrel-fermented fruit. There was no malolactic fermentation; it's bone dry and the acids are all natural and smooth. Delicate hints of toast and honeyed almonds bring still more depth and flavor interest to the juicy citrus fruit. - P. G.

Bergevin Lane 2005 Syrah, Columbia Valley
90 pts. Bergevin Lane’s wines show a rich mix of herbal and earth flavors, with ripe but not overly sweet fruit. This 100% varietal Syrah is herbaceous and aromatic, with rich scents that mix the purple fruits with intimations of herb, chocolate and cracker. It’s elegant and tight, and should be decanted for several hours. Once it breathes open, it’s perfectly balanced and drinkable right now. P.G.

Bergevin Lane 2005 Intuition Reserve Red Wine Red Blend, Columbia Valley
90 pts. Textured, spicy and exotically scented with red and black fruits, pepper, ground coffee, cinnamon, saffron and chocolate powder. It’s a delightful and complex wine, just under 15% alcohol, balanced and showing lots of plummy fruit that is backed with polished tannins and natural acids. P.G.

91+ pts. The 2005 Intuition, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, is opaque purple, with an expressive bouquet of cedar, spice box, plum, black cherry, and blackberry. Firm and structured upon entry, the wine is well-balanced by layers of fruit and savory flavors. With fine depth and concentration, it will develop for another 4-6 years and drink at its peak from 2012 to 2025 - Jay Miller

Bergevin Lane 2004 Alder Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills
89 pts. Tight and tannic, this is a Bordeaux blend which leans to the herbal side of the line. It’s got interesting aromas, a mix of leaf, soil and herb, and there is a solid red currant base to it. I suspect this will open up and smooth out in a few more years; right now it’s a bit chewy. P. G.

90 pts. There are two Bordeaux-styled wines beginning with the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon “Alder Ridge Vineyard.” In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon, it consists of 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot aged in a mix of European and American oak, 45% new. Purple-colored, it has an expressive nose of vanilla, spice box, cedar, tobacco, cassis, and black currants. This is followed by a structured wine with ripe flavors and excellent balance. The tannins are well concealed and should support several years of further evolution. Drink this stylish Cabernet through 2022. - Jay Miller

Bergevin Lane 2007 Calico White Blend, Columbia Valley
89 pts. An excellent version of this wine, mixing together 39% Chardonnay, 31% Roussanne and 30% Viognier. It was half stainless Band half barrel fermented, combined to deliver crisp, racy flavors of lemon cucumber, pineapple, citrus rind and a hint of pepper. Overall this is a very bright and nicely defined wine. P. G.

Bergevin Lane 2005 Merlot, Columbia Valley
87 pts. This is a sweet and round and forward Merlot, at least upon entry. Then it takes a right angle turn, adding more astringent flavors of rock and earth and green tea. It’s not quite Jekyll & Hyde, but it’s not entirely pulled together. It needs a substantial piece of grilled meat to help soften those finishing tannins. P.G.

86 pts. The red wines begin with the 2005 Merlot which has 14% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It spent 15 months in barrel, 13% new. Cedar, spice box, cherry and red currant aromas lead to a supple entry. The flavors are attractive but ultimately the wine comes off as too lean. - Jay Miller
